WHICH WAY? up or down!?

A science thing for my kids to do this summer........ we are planting a variety of garden seeds and tried germinating them floating in plain filter water in a dark spot (pantry) and several have sprouted well the book we have does not tell you if you plant the seed sprout UP or Down according to the sprout. Is the sprout the plant or the root?
